Read MoreWhen I got my first smartphone I promised myself that I would not become anti-social or addicted.
I remember when BlackBerrys (CrackBerrys) first came out. I was not a fan. I didn’t love how everyone I knew that had one was always on their phone. The lack of interaction irritated me, and I was totally anti-smart phone.
I know, right?
Believe it or not, but my family literally got together one Christmas and bought me my first iPhone. They had all jumped on the bandwagon, and I was the only one left behind. Guys, this was Christmas 2012 and I got a 4s. It made sense because my family lived all over the world, lieterally (at the time the five of us were spread between US, Belgium, and Nicaragua) and with the iPhone we could easily message and FaceTime.
Read MoreSo the other day while I was in the locker room between clients I overheard a conversation that made me sad and mad at the same time.
Girl 1: I’m just so frustrated. After all the work that I’ve put in; all the time and effort, and I’m a half a pound from where I started.
Girl 2: (timidly) Yeah. When I started strength training it was kinda frustrating too. So I’ve found if you just pay attention to how your clothes fit instead of your weight…
Girl 1: (bruskly) Yeah, I don’t like that. That doesn’t matter.
Read MoreI get it, I know. Food journaling/tracking can be a pain. Like, a super annoying pain. Like the 19-month younger sister pain when you're rocking the only child thing (love you girl!)! But the thing is this. The more information you have, the easier it will be to determine what is (or isn’t) working! I know tracking isn’t fun. Trust me, as a trainer, it’s not fun for me to BUG you about tracking- but it’s helpful, which is why I want you to do it.
That being said, I don’t think it’s necessary that you track ever morsel of food and drink from now until the rest of your life. I DO think it’s necessary in certain situations. Some of these include:
Starting a new nutrition program
Starting a new wellness program
When you want/need to lose body fat
When you hit a plateau in your body fat loss
When you have a goal with a deadline
The more you track, the better, but if nothing else, record what you are putting in your body.
Read MoreI don't know about you, but summer just kind of "happened" to me. There’s really no other way to describe the last 3 months other than that. I’m not entirely sure how they happened, but they did. 75% of the time I didn’t know what day it was, and imagine my shock when I realized that it’s already the end of August. AUGUST FRIENDS, August. What the what?!?
Unfortunately, when things like this just happen, that usually means schedule and routine are off. And when routines get off for whatever reason (whether it be summer, an injury, a celebration, or a sorrow) one of the easiest things to let slide is how we take care of ourselves; especially in the health and fitness category.
Read MoreI get it, I’ve been there. Your best friend (sister, mom, Becky at the office) is on a “diet” and they are getting amazing results. So you think, “This is it! This is the ONE! This person has found the diet that WORKS.” So you get the rules and you go all in.
You don’t see any results the first week, which doesn’t discourage you, because after all, you don’t have tons of weight to lose, and you know it takes time. You don’t see any results the second week, which is okay because you know it takes time for your body to adapt to any changes you make (which is totally true). You don’t see any results the third week, and you’re “fine” because you know it’s working for Becky, so you force yourself to stay committed, 100%. Then week four rolls around, and maybe you’ve lost half a pound, or (heaven forbid!) you’re up three-quarters of a pound! What the what?!?! How is this even possible? Becky has lost 20-plus pounds. You thought you’ve been following all the rules (you even skipped happy hour… 4 times!). Why are you such a failure? What are you doing wrong?!?!
