That Time I Asked You For Help
/Does this week feel strange to you? It’s been a weird week for me.
This past Saturday I realized it had been an entire year since I walked out the doors of the gym, 35.5 weeks pregnant, excited that I was done for the day, but reassuring my clients and students that I would be training and teaching at least for another 2 weeks.
I was wrong.
But not for the reason most people suspect. I was wrong, because that was the week the world shut down. That was the week everyone’s life changed before my (expected) big life change.
I spent the next six weeks going on at least one walk daily, finishing projects around the house, and doing newborn laundry. Oh, and making sure everything would be ready for me when I went back to teaching and training in July after my maternity leave.
But I didn’t go back.
Gyms stayed closed, and I was eventually let go from my teaching position. And I loved on my baby girl so hard. How lucky was I to be able to spend this extra time with her?
Lucky yes, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t grieve. I grieved the loss of my students, my clients, and the business I had spent five years building. I knew things were going to change post-baby and I had already started testing out some online training, but I wasn’t expecting the switch to be so drastic and so dramatic.
But that’s the good part!
I was already training online- so transitioning some of my clients to online training wasn’t as difficult as it may have been if I didn’t have the structure in place. I am still able to train a handful of clients virtually (over FaceTime or the like) as well as online (via an app), and it’s awesome! No, it’s not that same, but my clients are still getting great results, and we’re making it work.
We’re making it work.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this past year did not go how you expected it to go. Am I right? But you know what? You made it work. You’re reading this now- which means you’ve muddled through it somehow; and sometimes muddling is just fine. Sometimes you have to survive before you can thrive, and I’m here to tell you- That’s okay!
Maybe you didn’t learn a new language or skill during quarantine, or maybe you did.
Maybe you didn’t improve your home cooking skills, but you could tell me which restaurants have a strong take-out game (because let’s be honest- no one wants to get home to cold, mushy, take-out). Or maybe you have a home-grown sourdough starter that has a personality to match its fabulous name.
Maybe you kept yourself moving; walking, exercising, and keeping busy. Or maybe you watched the entirety of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+
How you’ve made it this far isn’t important. What’s important is that you’ve made it.
You did it. And so did I. See? We win quarantine! We made it!
But what’s next? I don’t know about you- but I’m ready to switch from “survive” to “thrive.” And it’s OKAY for thrive to look different than we thought it would a year ago.
So this is the time I ask YOU for YOUR help. Because if you’re still reading this- you’re obviously one of my people- and I love you for it. Between baby and pandemic, my business is obviously changing- and that’s okay (I expected it). However, after a lot of soul-searching these last few months- I’ve realized there are so many options, that deciding where to start has been a challenge (an exciting challenge, but a challenge). If you could take five minutes and answer a few questions to help me continue to design the content you want- I’d be beyond grateful.
No matter how this past year has gone- the time is now. Every day is a chance to be a little better than you were the day before. Baby steps add up. I see it every day with Clara. Start as small as you need. Just keep doing it. I believe in you. I believe in US.
Let’s do this. Let’s thrive.
Xo,
Erin
