New Year, New You

New Year, New You.

It’s the end of January and it’s still everywhere you look. And I. Just. Can’t.

New Year. New You.

I mean, I get the idea in general, I do. But there’s just something icky about the whole idea.

First and foremost, it implies there’s something wrong with the “you” that you are now, and I’m just not okay with that. That you has gotten you this far in life. The you that, despite all odds, has the opportunity to sit (or stand) here, and read my musings about this common phrase. This is the you that has overcome obstacles and challenges. This is the you who has made many trips around the sun and lives to tell about it. For good and for bad. This is the you that has made it through 100% of the bad days, even when you didn’t think you could.

Um… you are awesome!

One of my favorite Old School Memes. Who’s Awesome? You’re awesome!

So why on earth would you want a new you?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you’re perfect. You’re not, and neither am I. We’ve made dumb mistakes, dated our fair share of toads (ain’t no way those toads would become a prince), and even found ourselves learning the same lessons again and again. I’m not saying that you should settle for the way things are right now, never changing a thing.

In fact, I believe just the opposite.

I believe that we are all works in progress. I seriously doubt that it’s possible that we’ll ever reach a moment where we say, “Ah, yes. This is it. This is all I am ever meant to be or do.” Because if there’s one thing I've learned, it’s the more we grow the more we want to grow. In all areas of our life. Whether it be fitness, health, relationship, spiritual, or even financially based. As humans, we’re programmed for growth. Well, at least I assume you are. You’re here, with me, and I tend to attract people who are similar to me in that sort of way.

So this year, instead of thinking about a New Year and New You, instead chose to upgrade the you that you are.

Because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t have the opportunity to be better.

Here’s to you.
